The
following story is an accurate profile of a Tipp City resident currently
receiving services at Miami County Recovery Council.
The client’s name has been changed to honor her confidentiality: “Linda”
is 20 years old, and has been a client of Miami County Recovery Council on and
off over the past four years. Having
been raised in an alcoholic home, Linda initially sought services to learn
coping strategies to deal with her father’s alcoholism.
When she turned 18 Linda began experimenting with alcohol and quickly
developed substance dependence. After
a series of underage consumption charges Linda was referred to the Municipal
Drug Court program operated by MCRC. Through
supportive, structured services offered through this program Linda was able to
slowly establish a program of ongoing recovery, abstaining from alcohol and
other mood-altering drugs. Weekly
sessions in front of the drug court team (comprised of counselors, case
managers, judge and probation officer) assisted Linda in viewing her life as an
opportunity to make positive changes, to take control of her direction in life
for the first time. Linda
grew to trust the staff, realizing that she was being presented with a course of
action that would lead to an improved quality of life.
She completed the requirements necessary to obtain her GED and found
full-time employment that allowed her to gain additional independence.
As her self-esteem grew, Linda was able to become more confident about
her abilities to provide a loving home for her drug-free child that was born
while she was in the program. Though
she will continue to experience various obstacles to ongoing recovery, Linda has
made significant positive changes through her involvement with Miami County
Recovery Council. She has developed
some coping skills and gained the ability to trust those willing to assist her
in addressing life’s challenges without resorting to the use of alcohol or
other drugs. Not only has Linda’s
life dramatically improved, but the chances of a healthy, productive life for
her infant daughter are also greatly enhanced. Your charitable donations through the Tipp City Area United Way help fund this program and 25 additional health and human service programs to assist residents from Tipp City, Monroe and Bethel Townships. Our 2005 Campaign Goal is down over $20,000.00 and your generous support is urgently needed. With company bankruptcies, rising gas prices, and natural disasters, we know that times are tough, and that is why we need your help. If times are tough for those who have been fortunate in our community – just think how it is for those who are not.
